Every second Friday of the month at 7.30 pm we, the English speaking clientele of the Otherland Bookshop, meet to discuss a selected science fiction, fantasy or horror book and enjoy snacks and drinks in our favourite bookstore.

At our meeting on Friday, the 12th of May, we'll talk about Scott Hawkins' The Library at Mount Char. When their abusive foster father (who might or might not be God) disappers, ab bunch of teenagers happen to inherit the greatest magical library in the world from him. Having been kept away from the outside world, they don't have the slightest clue what to do with the enormous power at their hands ... this is definitely not YA fare. It's funny and violent and Tarantino-esque in the best sense, but it also happens to be a very thoughtful and touching novel about the existential character of teenage friendship and enmity. Oh, yes, it also has a hilariously disturbing scence were a veterinarian has to operate on a half-tranquilized tiger in it ... definitely one of the most positive surprises in reading I've experienced last year!
