I first read "A Song For A New Day" at the end of 2019, and the subsequent experience of living through a large part of its beginning and backstory has been an especially surreal element of 2020 (as if any more surreality was really needed). The novel mostly deals with the aftermath of a world forever changed by the effects of pandemics and authoritarian tendencies. And while the realistic future it portrays is not one that most of us would wish for, it has a central theme of hope that we will be able to overcome divisiveness - both the epidemiologically necessary and the maliciously imposed.
