Headless corpses, undead cults, regular folk driven insane: modern Argentina is a dystopian free-for-all in Mariana Enríquez’s stunning collection Things We Lost in the Fire, which takes the aftermath of the last dictatorship (1976-1983) and shows a country scarred by social disfunction. Enríquez, who has a background in literature, journalism and punk music, consistently brings an idiosyncratic perspective of the troubles through her tales, and Megan McDowell’s translation gives us 12 of these, each well worth reading.
